Zcash found the one bug auditors can never catch. Their answer, shipping this month, is something crypto has never done for money this real: formal verification, the security argument checked by a machine theorem by theorem. Here is how it works, ELI16. First, why auditors can't catch it. On a transparent chain counterfeiting is loud: the ledger is public, anyone can recount the supply and spot fake coins in hours. Zcash's shielded pool is encrypted. A counterfeiting bug there mints coins that no replay and no supply check will ever show. Last month researchers found exactly such a bug. Every zk proof system makes two promises. Completeness: an honest proof always passes. Soundness: a fake proof never passes. Broken completeness is annoying, your transaction fails and you see it. Broken soundness is the invisible printer: someone proves "I own this coin" without owning it. Think of an exam. Completeness means the student who knows the material passes. Soundness means the student who doesn't, fails. The Orchard bug was a soundness hole: an exam you could cheat on, with no way for anyone to ever find out. So the team rewrote the verifier's math in Lean, a language where a computer checks every step of a proof. The core theorem: if the verifier accepts a proof, a valid witness exists behind it, satisfying every constraint of the circuit. Either that compiles or it doesn't. Human trust removed from the loop. Now the part I respect most: they publish what is NOT verified. The proofs cover the verifier's math; node software and wallets still rely on ordinary audits. Deliberate: a bug in node code produces the detectable kind of counterfeit, so the machine-checked proofs sit exactly on the blind spot. One gap they admit openly: theorems live in a math model, the network runs Rust. The bridge is a trick called fingerprint matching: both the Rust verifier and the Lean model reduce "accept" to one giant equation, and they check on real proofs that both assemble the identical one. Most "formally verified" labels in crypto mean one contract, one audit, three years ago. This one ships with public Lean code and a public list of its own limits.
